If you have been following me the past few years, you may already know that my favorite event of the year is the Jazz Age Lawn Party. I jokingly tease my friends that I endure every other 364 days of the year just to make it to this one magical 24 hours when I channel my alter ego 'Chloe Vinewood' and teleport back in time to an age of defiant jazz, the flamboyant steps of the Charleston, the eclectic ease and drama of flapper dressing, and the reminiscent taste of a St. Germain cocktail that seems transcend the taste buds of time. I'm convinced heaven is a summer day in 1922, and this is just a glimpse.
This year I was fortunate to attend the party as a VIP guest of my journalist roommate Esther Lee who was invited to the event through work. I felt a little bit out of my comfort zone entering the designated VIP area set up with a private bar sponsored by St. Germain, crisp white linen table settings, catered raw seafood bar & homemade ice cream, and not to mention all of the most beautifully costumed people you could crowd into one area. In prior years I usually attend the event with friends and casually camp out on the the lawn, so this was a total privileged change of pace. It was most perplexing to be greeted by some of my fashion icons like Lynn Yaeger, from Vogue, and Laura Wills, owner of beloved Screaming Mimi's Vintage Boutique and complimented on my outfit - I could have passed out from insecurity and admiration.
The most rewarding parts about attending this year were:
1. Getting to wear one of my own designs, the 'Mildred Nursing Gown,' it seemed to be the perfect modern twist on a twenties frock to fit the occasion.
2. The access to mingle amongst the most dedicated JALP attendees.
As if I wasn't already passionate about the spirit of this party, this year I grew an even deeper appreciation for the devoted crowd of jazz age connoisseurs who have preserved a most exciting moment in time. Michael Arnella & His Dreamland Orchestra [and friends] have invited us all along for a magical time travel to escape the numbing reality of our tech driven lives and reignite our souls with the revolutionary spirit of this roaring era.
I look forward to seeing everyone in August! Who is planning on going & am I the only one who is already planning my outfit?
